Self Promotion

...in the non-illegal way! I plan to get started on my personal portfolio website in the next week or so, 'plan' being the key word there! I have settled on the name SKH Design....for now! There is a link to the facebook page on the right if you would like to see some more work.

So this is the week we get our final briefs handed out for the final time! One is a Digital Publishing brief, another Sound and Vision and the last one is our Personal Project. I'd quite like to do something unique but also something that deals with corporate identity as I feel that this is what my portfolio is lacking at the moment.

If anyone has any idea's for a unique personal project throw them my way please!
I am quite disappointed by the lack of comments also....come on people, be a bit more vocal!

The Decision has been made!

Collectively we decided on a concept for the Degree show which will remain a secret for now. It is very catchy! I think you will like it. My idea's came in at six votes out of twelve and the final idea got 9.....so not too bad!

I have volunteered to produce a database of contacts to invite or inform of the Degree Show in the Lothians and Edinburgh. I should really get cracking.....

If you wish to be invited to the show, leave me a comment with your email and I'll be sure to add you to the mailing list.

Here is a wee teaser picture to get you thinking......

Degree Show Promotion

Our first day back to college, start of semester two and we're given a sheet entitled "Group Show and Promotion." Basically we must promote our show, fund raise and get people to the event.

To name but a few we must produce: A group poster at A3 size or above; an invitation to the private view; a group promotional item; a database of
contacts; an image bank and the obvious...fundraising in order to make all of the above possible. Personally we must create a webpage, which in my case will take form under the domain name welovegraphicdesign.co.uk...and I will continue to persuade the guy who owns .com to sell it to me....muhahahaha. My website will contain most of my portfolio and I will also update my hard copy portfolio for presentation as well.

Soooooo...what does all this mean? Well later on today, Thursday 14th January, we must present our ideas for the above to the class and as a group we will chose the best one and it will be put into production from immediate effect. In the past, degree shows have promoted themselves in various ways from slime in envelopes, a buzzer to 'shock' you when open it and a relevant statistic, calling cards etc. My idea's so far consist of something to do with modern technology, iphone, ipod etc as a digital invite, some sort of game show contestant theme. "Who goes? You decide" style. Entering the unknown, being unknown or anonymous in the big bad world. Who knows! I guess tomorrow will bring the answers to these things....

And the fundraising? I hear you ask. Well, my mum has done and will continue to do lots of charirty and fundraising work so I gave her a wee tinkle earlier on. We had a brainstorm and came up with things along the lines of a car treasure hunt, a karaoke night, silent auction, band night, race night etc. I'm sure there is a lot more brainstorming to be continued there though!

It's all quite scary how fast it is going to happen and this is really reflected in how quickly a decision is going to be made based on what is most probably a loose idea presented to the group. The production side of things needs to be completed over easter and then the invites sent out in plenty time for the show which is to be held the first week of June 2010. Any ideas?...throw them my way!

I think these images are pretty self explanatory in terms of previous invites/posters.

Semester One is Over...

and so is Christmas and New Year! Hope you all had a good one. Here's to 2010....for me the year the dream becomes a reality....well that's the plan anyway.

A bit more about me

I began my design route after starting out on the Intro to Digital Media course at Edinburgh's Telford College. This course included sound and vision, Radio, Animation and various graphic design and photo editing elements. To cut a long story short, I didn't complete the course and after being promised a place on the HND Graphics course by an "unnamed" lecturer, I found myself searching for another course in Scotland with a Degree option.

Adam Smith College:Inspiring Learning

My search took me to Stenton, Glenrothes where I found a course named HND
Visual Communication, I took my portfolio along with me when I went to find out more information and got offered a place there and then. Phew! So having done very little design work apart from Advanced Higher Art and Credit Standard Grade Graphic Communication, I found this quite daunting. However, it was a challenge I was more than willing to attack head on. I moved to Kirkcaldy and started the course in the Autumn of 2007. First year was a huge learning curve but after 1 day I knew this was the route I wanted to go down, I had so much to learn and so much to take on board but it was so exciting. Second year came and went so fast, I passed almost every module with a Merit and was very pleased with my progress. My final overall grade was an A and I was ecstatic! I could never have done it without the great lecturers, no really, they also teach at Duncan and Jordanson in Dundee and the ECA. We have the best of both worlds. I would HIGHLY recommend the course to anyone who is interested in studying graphic design in Scotland. The end of year show was a great success and almost everyone in the class passed. We lost two of our HND graduates to the LCC, London and to Duncan and Jordanson. Congrats to both of them again!

The Briefs

Now I am into my third and final year on a course which is ra
n by Abertay University, Dundee, but is based at the Stenton Campus in Glenrothes of Adam Smith College. Semester one finished mid December and we returned to college on Monday. I have one module still to find out the results for but the news is good so far with my highest mark being a B. Semester one modules consisted of a Typographic brief in which we had to design a corporate identity, catalogue, postal pack and invitation for a new typographic museum opening in Basel, Switzerland.

Along side this project ran an Illustration brief. Within this brief we had to design 5 pocket book jackets with the theme of New Chinese Voices. Each novel had to be fiction, by an author that was still alive and all 5 had to have a running theme that linked them in some way or another. After researching for far too many weeks, and wasting valuable time, I finally chose the theme of the role women play within Chinese culture.

The last brief than was ran along side the others was a brief for an Interactive web design with a typographic theme called Broadcast. We had to find a 5 minute broadcast that approached and issue or suchlike and explore it typographically. As this was a double credit we also had to create the typographic content ourselves. I decided to chose Chris Rock's stand up sketch on Slavery, being a bit of a comedian myself, I wanted it to be lighthearted and something people could have a good belly jiggle to. In terms of creating the webpage, we were to use Flash. I was completely out of my depth as I had a personal hatred for Flash purely as it had defeated me in HNC and HND years and I just didn't grasp it. I decided I would give this my best shot and overcome my Flashphobia. Ironically, as far as I know, the webpage was my best mark for semester one! I still haven't found out my mark for my Illustration...... Link to Broadcast.com - my Webpage. (you will need your sound on)

Feel free to leave some comments, or suggestions for future blogs! I have never blogged before and this is my first attempt so it would be awesome to hear some responses!
